Essex and its boundaries

Parts of west Essex sit close to neighbouring London boroughs. From towns such as Epping, Loughton, Brentwood and Grays, a suitable London venue may be within a sensible travelling distance, so it is worth searching across the boundary.

From other parts of the county, events in Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire or Suffolk may be equally practical. Harlow sits close to the Hertfordshire boundary, Saffron Walden is near Cambridgeshire, and Colchester is within reach of parts of Suffolk. County boundaries do not always match the quickest journey, so use the postcode search to compare tournaments within the distance your players and families can realistically travel.

Kent is the different case. It faces south Essex across the Thames, so a venue in north Kent can look close on a map while the road journey may involve the Dartford Crossing or another London crossing. If you are comparing an Essex event with one over the water, check the route, the traffic and any current charge before you enter, and build the crossing into your day.

From the 2026/27 season, the standard pathway in England is 3v3 at U7, 5v5 at U8 and U9, 7v7 at U10 and U11, 9v9 at U12 and U13, and 11v11 from U14. Tournaments sometimes use alternatives such as 6v6, so check the individual listing. Many outdoor grassroots tournaments take place from late spring through the summer, with particularly strong availability between June and August. Timing varies by organiser and venue, and some tournaments using indoor or artificial pitches may run at other times of year.

Popular summer tournaments often take entries months in advance, so it is worth looking early or setting an alert for your age group.

Before you commit, check the organiser-declared level against your squad, the playing format and squad size, the number of guaranteed games, the date and kick-off time, and the wet-weather and refund policy. Work out the travel honestly too: the drive at that time on that day, parking at the venue, and the route and any current crossing charge if the event sits over the Thames.
