Tournaments just outside Wales

Wales borders the West Midlands around Herefordshire and Shropshire, the North West around Cheshire, and the South West across the Severn Estuary near Gloucestershire and Bristol, so a suitable tournament may sit just over the border.

Tournament details are organiser-declared. Always check with the organiser before entering or travelling.

Search by postcode when distance matters

A postcode search can be the quickest way to see what is genuinely reachable because the radius does not stop at a national boundary. This is particularly useful in North East Wales close to Cheshire, and in South East Wales around Newport and Monmouthshire, close to Gloucestershire and Bristol across the Severn.

Playing formats in Wales

Filter by age group from U7 to U16 and by the organiser-declared level. The level is set by the organiser, not assessed by FindMeFootball, so treat it as a guide and confirm before entering. Our guide to choosing the right level has more.

Wales follows the Football Association of Wales rules rather than England Football's FutureFit pathway. For the 2026/27 season the maximum formats are 4v4 at U7, 5v5 at U8 and U9, 7v7 at U10 and U11, 9v9 at U12 and U13, and 11v11 from U14. These are maximums, and a smaller format may be used, so check the individual tournament rules rather than assuming.

In practice the Welsh and English ladders now match from U8 upwards. The one difference across the ages we cover is U7, where Wales plays 4v4 and England plays 3v3. If you are bringing a team across the border, that is the age group to check.

Sanctioning, and the younger age groups

Two things are worth knowing before you enter or run a tournament in Wales. Both are Football Association of Wales rules rather than ours, and FindMeFootball does not check or enforce either of them.

Festivals and tournaments must be sanctioned. Under FAW rules an event must be sanctioned before it goes ahead, and a club applies to its Area Association, which reviews the application and forwards it to the FAW. There are six Area Associations: Central Wales, Gwent County, North East Wales, North Wales Coast, South Wales and West Wales. If you are entering a tournament, you can ask the organiser whether it has been sanctioned.

U6 to U11 is non-competitive. FAW rules do not permit league or cup competition at those ages, and no competition element will be sanctioned at a summer festival for them. The FAW also says results of festival matches at those ages should not be published, and its guidance for clubs is that there are no tournament winners and no trophies in those age groups. Ask the organiser how the day is being run if you are unsure.

Fixtures and results at Welsh festivals

The underlying FAW rule covers U6 to U11.

For U12 and older events, organisers may use results, tables and knockout tools only where competition is permitted under the current FAW regulations and the event's own sanction.

When Wales tournaments happen

Many outdoor grassroots tournaments take place during spring and summer. Timing varies by organiser, location and venue, while some indoor or artificial-pitch events may run at other times of year. Popular events can fill well in advance, so it is worth looking early or setting an alert.

Choosing and entering a tournament

Before you commit, check the organiser-declared level against your squad, the playing format and squad size, the number of guaranteed games, the date and kick-off time, and the wet-weather and refund policy.
